Adapting to New Horizons; My Experience as a Dentist in the UK
My journey, from being a dentist in India to establishing myself in the UK, has been filled with challenges, growth and countless learning experiences. I’m Dr. Seema Chhajer, and I’d like to share my story—one that began with a strong foundation in India and has led to exciting new opportunities in the UK.
My Beginnings: Building a Foundation in India
I graduated as a dentist in India in 2007-2008, and for the next seven years, I immersed myself in my practice. Those years were invaluable, allowing me to refine my skills and gain the experience needed to provide quality care to my patients. However, in 2016, life took a new direction when I moved to the UK. This move presented both personal and professional challenges, but I was determined to continue my passion for dentistry.
Transitioning to the UK: Navigating New Challenges
Moving to the UK wasn’t just about adjusting to a new country; it meant transitioning into an entirely different dental system. In 2019, I registered as a dental therapist, marking the beginning of my journey in the UK’s dental field. The transition was far from easy. I knew I needed to prepare thoroughly, both clinically and non-clinically, to succeed here.
Given that I have two children, I decided to approach this transition in phases. I attended several courses to better understand the UK’s dental system, which differs significantly from what I was used to in India. This approach allowed me to balance my family responsibilities while gradually building my knowledge and confidence.
Finding Support: The Role of Rodericks Dental Partners
One of the most critical aspects of my journey has been the support I received from Rodericks Dental Partners. When I first heard about Rodericks Dental Partners from a friend, I was working as a hygienist, but I was eager to return to full dental practice. Within five months of joining, I completed my exams, and Rodericks Dental Partners offered me a mentee position, which was a significant step forward in my career.
The mentorship I’ve received at Rodericks Dental Partners has been invaluable. My mentor has been incredible, always available whenever I need guidance. His constant encouragement has made a world of difference, boosting my confidence and helping me regain my clinical skills.
Dr. Kulvinder Nijjar, my clinical lead, has also played a vital role in my journey. She helped me navigate the complexities of the UK dental system, from submitting my PCSE form to guiding me through the PLVE process. Her support has been instrumental in my success, and I’m truly grateful for her guidance.
Balancing Work and Life: A Supportive Environment
One of the things I appreciate most about Rodericks Dental Partners is their understanding of the importance of work-life balance. As a mother of two, I’ve chosen to work part-time and Rodericks Dental Partners has been supportive of this decision, allowing me to give time to my family while continuing to grow professionally.
Looking Ahead: Continuing My Journey in the UK
Rodericks Dental Partners has provided me with a platform to start working in NHS dentistry, which is helping me achieve my goal of becoming an associate dentist in the UK. The support for continuous professional development, including funding for courses and free CPDs, has been incredibly beneficial in keeping my skills up to date and advancing my career.
For other international dentists considering practising in the UK, my advice is simple: follow the system. Even if you have years of experience, the UK dental system is unique, and it’s crucial to understand both the clinical and non-clinical aspects. Listen to your team members and mentors—they can provide invaluable guidance as you navigate this new environment.
The Power of Support and Perseverance
I’m grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve received. From the strong foundation I built in India to the new challenges I’ve embraced in the UK, each step has been a learning experience. Rodericks Dental Partners has been a key part of my journey, providing the support and resources I needed to succeed.
As I continue to grow in my career, I’m excited about what the future holds. My journey is far from over, and I’m ready to take on whatever comes next with confidence and determination.
