Finding Support and Success: Dr. Shameem’s Experience with Rodericks Dental Partners
I'm Dr. Shameem Nisa Gulam Mohamed. I graduated with a BDS degree from Pondicherry University in India back in 2013. My journey to practising dentistry in the UK has been quite a ride, filled with unforeseen challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and my son’s cancer diagnosis. Despite these hurdles, I managed to clear my Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) on my first attempt.
Discovering Rodericks Dental Partners
I wasn’t actively looking for work when I came across Rodericks Dental Partners. It was Gemma from the recruitment team at Rodericks Dental Partners who reached out to me via LinkedIn, and that connection turned out to be pivotal.
Overcoming Doubts
Given my ten-year career gap, I was quite sceptical about my prospects. I was worried about whether I'd have the support and guidance that I needed, however there was no need to worry! My practice, Flitwick High Street Dental Practice, is incredibly supportive, and my mentor has been fantastic, boosting my confidence significantly. Nicola, the practice manager, has also been wonderfully accommodating with my need for flexibility.
Work-Life Balance
The work-life balance at Rodericks Dental Partners is a huge plus, especially for women. Balancing work with family life is challenging, particularly in the health sector. I have to give credit to my practice manager and my mentor, along with my nurse, Zoe. They’ve all been instrumental in moulding me into the dentist I am today.
Career Development
I’ve completed some private courses and attended an International Dental Graduate induction organised by Rodericks Dental Partners which was really informative and very insightful. These opportunities have been beneficial, and I plan to take advantage of further career development opportunities when the time is right. Dentistry is evolving, with a growing focus on aesthetics. I’m therefore interested in gaining more skills in composite bonding and cosmetic dentistry to better serve my patients. I know when I am ready to develop my skills in this area, Rodericks Dental Partners will support me.
Induction Process
The induction process at Rodericks Dental Partners was very thorough. We had a two-week period where we shadowed our mentors to understand patient communication and treatment planning for both NHS and private patients. This training significantly boosted my confidence and understanding of practising dentistry in the UK.
Key Factors for International Dentists
For international dentists like myself, I believe the key factors to look for are mentorship, flexibility and support. Rodericks Dental Partners has excelled in providing these, making it an excellent choice for those coming from abroad. Work-life balance is crucial, especially for those with families. The supportive culture here has made a significant difference for me.
Networking and Recommendations
Networking with other dental graduates and dentists at Rodericks Dental Partners has also been beneficial. I’ve recommended Rodericks Dental Partners to others, including one of my seniors who recently settled in the UK. I believe the support and opportunities here are fantastic.
The journey may have its ups and downs, but with the support and guidance from Rodericks Dental Partners, you can achieve great things. If you’re an international dentist looking for a supportive, flexible and rewarding environment, I highly recommend Rodericks Dental Partners.
