Understanding Tooth Fillings

Dental fillings are a restorative treatment used to fill areas of decay or damage in a tooth. They can give long-lasting results to restore the structure of your affected tooth. They also prevent any further damage to keep your smile happy and healthy.

When Do You Need a Tooth Filling?

One of the most common reasons for needing a dental filling is to treat cavities caused by tooth decay. Getting a filling can pause the decay process and stop toothache. They can also fix damage to your teeth like chips and cracks which may have happened during an injury or by eating something hard. Your dentist will tell you if a filling is needed or if a different treatment is necessary such as a crown.

Types of Tooth Fillings Available

Find a filling material that works best for you.

Composite Fillings

White composite fillings are a durable solution that blends in with your tooth colour, making them appear more natural then alternatives. The tooth filling material is made from powdered glass quartz, silica or other ceramic particles added to a resin base.

Amalgam Fillings

These are silver in colour, and the material is made from elemental mercury, silver, tin and copper. They’re known for their endurance, giving patients a well-established solution. They’re a very effective way to restore teeth, especially the hardwearing molars ones at the back.

Ceramic Fillings

These are usually made from porcelain, which is an ideal solution if you want your filling to last a long time. Their durability means they’re reliable and less likely to stain compared to other filling materials.

How it works

    1

Examining the Tooth and Preparing the Area

Firstly, the area around your tooth will be numbed with a local anaesthetic solution so you can feel comfortable during the procedure. The dentist will then use instruments to remove any decayed part of the tooth. If necessary, a base or liner may be placed on the tooth as well.

    2

    Filling the Cavity

Once deciding which type of filling you want, the material for it is mixed. It’s then packed tightly into the cavity to fill the missing structure.

    3

    Final Adjustments and Polishing

The dental filling is then shaped appropriately and smoothed down. Any rough edges will be polished to make them smooth. Your bite is then checked to make sure the filling feels comfortably when you bite together. Your dentist will tell you anything specific you need to do after the procedure. For example, this might be not eating for a certain amount of time or that side.

Benefits of Tooth Fillings

Having a filling means you’ve taken steps to maintain your oral health. They can stop decay from causing further problems and damage. Cavities can also be painful and make it difficult to eat, so it’s best to fill them to ensure no further progression of your issues. Dental fillings are a long-term solution that allow you to keep using your tooth as usual.
